Flowchart Friday, Wednesday Edition: Are Beautiful Women Funny?

Journalist and blogger Nikke Finke threw some serious shade Julie Bowen’s way on Sunday while live-blogging the Emmy’s on her showbiz website, Deadline.com. Commenting on Bowen’s Emmy win for her comedic work on Modern Family, Finke said “[b]eautiful actresses are not funny. They don’t know how to do comedy. … Only women who grew up ugly and stayed ugly, or through plastic surgery became beautiful, can pull off sitcoms or standups. Bowen isn’t a comedienne just like Brooke Shields wasn’t and a zillion more. Because it’s all about emotional pain and humiliation and rising above both by making people laugh with you instead of at you.”

Hear that, ladies? If you’re pretty, you’re not funny. Because beautiful women never experience emotional pain or humiliation. Still confused? Allow me to help you out with that (click to enlarge):

    Exactly. And while you *could* argue that some of these women had body image struggles (Cho) or awkward phases (if you read Tina Fey’s ‘Bossypants’ you’re treated to some pretty awesome real-life Liz Lemon adolescent photos), Lucille Ball was a fucking SHOWGIRL. She actually had to *downplay* how pretty she was to be taken serious as a comedienne. Because some asshole somewhere decided that beautiful women aren’t funny. And here it is, 2012, and people are still perpetuating that shit.

    Who care if beautiful woman are funny. The real question we should be asking ourselves is, are funny woman beautiful? I know I’m funny, but I really really want to be pretty. :(
